10 Things You Should Never Do With Essential Oils

by Jia Cherng Yeap on May 09, 2026
10 Things You Should Never Do With Essential Oils

Essential oils are natural, and “natural” fools people into thinking “harmless.” It isn’t the same thing. Concentrated plant oils are some of the most chemically active substances in an ordinary home, and a handful of common mistakes have put people in hospital with serious burns.

None of what follows is scaremongering. Every hazard here is documented, several in clinical case reports. Used with a little knowledge, aromatic oils are safe. Used carelessly, a few of them genuinely are not. Here are the ten to know.

1.Never apply citrus oils before going out in the sun
This is the most serious, least-known hazard on the list, and it deserves the top spot.
Cold-pressed citrus oils such as bergamot, lemon, lime, grapefruit, bitter orange contain compounds called furanocoumarins. On skin exposed to UV light, these trigger a phototoxic reaction: the compound binds to DNA in skin cells and reacts with sunlight, killing cells and damaging tissue. The result is burns, blistering, and discolouration that can last for months.

The reason it’s so dangerous is that it’s silent. There’s usually no pain or warning at the time. The burns develop hours later and worsen over the following one to three days. The cases are real. A woman who applied undiluted bergamot oil to relax, then used a steam bath and a tanning bed, spent a week in hospital with extensive burns. A fifteen-year-old who put undiluted bergamot on his neck to help him sleep, then played football the next day under partly cloudy skies, woke to find his neck covered in painful blisters, thirty hours after application.

The rule: after applying any cold-pressed citrus oil to skin, stay out of sun and UV for at least 12 hours, and up to 24 to 72 depending on the oil. In a tropical climate, where sun exposure is constant and often unavoidable, the simpler rule is to keep citrus oils off exposed skin altogether, or use steam-distilled or furanocoumarin-free (“FCF”) versions, which don’t carry the risk.

Note this applies to ingestion too. Swallow a phototoxic oil and go into the sun, and your whole body is at risk, not just one patch of skin.

2. Never apply essential oils undiluted

Essential oils should almost never touch skin neat. They are concentrated to a degree that the plant never delivers it can take dozens of kilograms of raw material to make a small bottle and applied directly they can cause irritation, sensitisation, and burns.

“Sensitisation” is the one people underestimate. It isn’t a one-time reaction. Once your skin has been sensitised to an oil, it can react every time thereafter, sometimes permanently, and sometimes to related oils you’d previously tolerated. A single careless neat application can cost you an oil for life.

The rule: dilute in a carrier oil before skin contact. A standard everyday dilution is 2–3%,  roughly 12 to 18 drops of essential oil per 30ml of carrier. For children, the elderly, or sensitive skin, go lower. This is exactly why our oil blends come pre-diluted in a jojoba and MCT base rather than sold as neat essential oil.

3. Never assume “natural” means safe to swallow
There is a persistent belief, pushed hard on social media, that essential oils can be taken internally  a drop of lemon in water, oregano oil for a cold. Certified aromatherapists overwhelmingly advise against it.

Essential oils are lipophilic and extraordinarily concentrated. What feels like “just a drop” is a substantial dose of active compound, and several oils are toxic to the liver or nervous system at surprisingly small quantities. Ingestion is the route most likely to cause serious poisoning, especially in children.

The rule: don’t ingest essential oils. If a use case genuinely calls for internal use, that’s the territory of a qualified clinical practitioner, not a wellness reel.

4. Never use essential oils around cats
Cats are uniquely vulnerable, and most people have no idea.

Cats lack an enzyme pathway - glucuronidation, that mammals use to break down many compounds, including those in a lot of essential oils. Oils high in phenols and monoterpenes accumulate to toxic levels in a cat’s system. Tea tree, eucalyptus, peppermint, citrus, and pine are among the worst.

Diffusing counts. Micro-droplets settle on a cat’s fur, which it then grooms and ingests. A diffuser running in a room a cat shares is a genuine hazard, not a theoretical one.

The rule: if you have cats, be extremely cautious with diffusion, keep oils well away from them, and check any specific oil before use. When in doubt, don’t diffuse in shared space.

5. Never diffuse around babies and young children without care
The safe threshold is much higher than most people assume.

Paediatric guidance advises no essential oils at all around infants under three months. For older children, certain oils  eucalyptus and peppermint especially, because of compounds that can affect breathing in the very young are best avoided entirely under the age of three to six. Even gentle oils like lavender or chamomile should be used only in a well-ventilated room, for short periods, well away from the child.

The rule: no oils around infants; extreme caution with young children; ventilate; keep sessions short; and check every specific oil against paediatric guidance. When unsure, ask a paediatrician rather than the internet.

6. Never store oils in a hot bathroom
Heat, light, and air are the three things that break essential oils down  and a tropical bathroom supplies all three.

Degraded oils aren’t just weaker. Oxidised oils are actually more likely to cause skin sensitisation than fresh ones. A bottle left on a sunny bathroom shelf through a Southeast Asian year isn’t just losing scent; it’s becoming more likely to irritate.

The rule: store oils capped, upright, in a cool dark drawer or cupboard, out of the bathroom. In this climate that’s not fussiness , it’s the difference between an oil that lasts and one that turns.

7. Never skip the patch test
Anyone can react to any oil, and there’s no way to know in advance except to test.

The rule: before using a new oil or blend regularly, apply a small amount, properly diluted to the inner forearm and wait 24 hours. Redness, itching, or irritation means don’t use it. This is quick, and it’s the single most reliable way to avoid an unpleasant surprise across a wider area.

One specific warning: if you do have a skin reaction to an oil, don’t treat it with another essential oil. That compounds the problem and can trigger further reactions. Wash the area, use a cold compress, and reach for a plain carrier oil if anything.

8. Never assume more is better
With aromatics, concentration works against you past a certain point.

For diffusion, holistic-aromatherapy guidance suggests 3–5 drops in a standard bedroom diffuser. Beyond that you gain nothing and risk headaches, nausea, and counterproductively, if you’re diffusing for sleep,  overstimulation. Too strong a scent can keep you awake rather than settle you.

The rule: use less than you think. Three to five drops to diffuse; 2–3% to dilute. If you can’t smell it after a while, that’s usually nose fatigue, not a signal to add more.

9. Never use undiluted oils during pregnancy without advice
Pregnancy changes the calculus entirely, and the honest position is one of caution.

Several oils are conventionally avoided in pregnancy, clary sage and others, on the grounds that their safety hasn’t been established, not that harm is proven. But “not established” is reason enough to be careful when you’re pregnant. The absence of good safety data is precisely the problem.

The rule: anyone pregnant or breastfeeding should speak with a healthcare provider before using aromatic oils, dilute heavily if they do, avoid ingestion completely, and treat the first trimester with particular caution.

10. Never trust a bottle just because it says “therapeutic grade”
There is no regulatory body that defines or certifies “therapeutic grade.” The phrase is marketing, not a standard. Any brand can print it.

What actually indicates quality is verifiable: the botanical (Latin) name of the plant, the country of origin, the extraction method, and ideally GC/MS testing that confirms what’s in the bottle. Amber or dark glass, because light degrades oils. A brand that tells you what’s in the product and where it came from.

The rule: ignore “therapeutic grade.” Look for the Latin name, the origin, the extraction method, and honest ingredient disclosure. A brand being specific about its formulation is worth more than any unregulated badge.
