# Reed Diffuser Not Smelling? How to Make It Stronger

Mahasutra · 2026-10-22

Why reed diffusers stop smelling, how to make them stronger, how often to flip and replace reeds, where to place them, and how long they last.

Reed diffusers are the easiest way to scent a room: no flame, no electricity, no effort. But they can be frustrating, smelling wonderful for a week and then fading to almost nothing, even though the bottle is still half full. Here is how reed diffusers work, why they fade, and how to make yours stronger.

## How a reed diffuser works

A reed diffuser is a container of fragrance diluted in a carrier liquid, with porous reeds standing in it. Each reed is a bundle of tiny channels. The liquid travels up those channels by capillary action, like water in a plant stem, and evaporates from the exposed reed tips, releasing scent into the room.

The carrier matters. Good reed diffusers use a thin, evaporating carrier, such as dipropylene glycol methyl ether (DPM), rather than heavy oils that clog reeds and don't evaporate. Our Reed Diffuser Glass Jar comes pre-filled with 70 ml of DPM carrier: you add 30 ml of any Aromatic Infusion Oil, swirl, and leave it to blend for two to three hours before adding the seven rattan reeds.

## Why your reed diffuser stopped smelling

- Your nose has adapted. This is the most common reason. After a few days with the same scent, your brain filters it out. Guests will notice it when you can't.

- The reeds are clogged. Over weeks, dust and the heavier fragrance molecules block the channels, and less liquid travels up.

- The reeds are dry at the top. If they haven't been flipped, the tips dry out and stop releasing scent.

- The placement is wrong. A diffuser in a corner with no air movement barely spreads; one in a large, open space gets diluted.

- The lighter notes have evaporated. Citrus and fresh top notes evaporate first, so what remains can smell weaker or different.

## How to make a reed diffuser stronger

- Flip the reeds every two to three days. The wet ends go up and release a fresh burst of scent. Do it over a sink or tissue, as the reeds drip.

- Add more reeds for a stronger scent; remove some for a softer one or to make the liquid last longer.

- Replace the reeds every time you refill, or roughly every one to two months. Old reeds lose their wicking power.

- Place it in gentle airflow: a hallway, near (but not in front of) a doorway, or a room people walk through. Avoid direct sunlight and heat, and don't put it right under an air-conditioning vent, which speeds evaporation too much.

- Match size to room: one diffuser suits a bathroom, bedroom or small living space. Use two in a large, open room.

- Rotate scents seasonally, or keep different scents in different rooms, so your nose doesn't adapt.

## How long should a reed diffuser last?

It depends on the volume, number of reeds, room temperature and airflow. In a warm, humid climate with air-conditioning, evaporation is faster than in cooler homes. A 100 ml diffuser with seven reeds will typically last several weeks to a couple of months. Top up with fresh infusion oil when the level drops.

## Reed diffuser safety

- Place it on a stable surface where it can't be knocked over, and use a coaster: the liquid can mark wood, painted surfaces and some plastics.

- Keep it out of reach of children and pets. Read are essential oils safe for pets?

- Wipe spills straight away with a dry cloth or tissue.

- The liquid is flammable: keep it away from candles and open flames.

Reeds are only one way to scent a room. Our guide on how to make your home smell good compares reeds, lava stones, ceramic diffusers, ultrasonic diffusers, candles and sprays.

## How often should I flip reed diffuser sticks?
Every two to three days, over a sink or tissue as they drip.

## Why can't I smell my reed diffuser anymore?
Usually your nose has adapted. Clogged or dry reeds and poor placement are the other common causes.

## How often should I replace the reeds?
With every refill, or roughly every one to two months.
